Willy Ellison was a respected live exporter and one-time employee of Wellard, who tragically passed away in Indonesia in 2004.
The live export industry rallied in support of Willy’s family, and each year holds a charity auction, the proceeds of which are donated to the Willy Ellison Children’s Trust.
The highlight of the auction is the sale of the Wave Hill bullock. The bullock has become a permanent fixture at the Darwin Live Export yards, with upkeep provided by whichever exporter is using the yards at the time.
Each year ownership of the bullock passes to the highest bidder at the charity auction. In late 2006 Wellard director Steve Meerwald bought 12 months ownership of the bullock for a record $8500, the equivalent of $15.45/kg.
Mr Meerwald said it was the highest price he had paid for a steer, especially a steer the company would never take delivery of, but it was for a good cause.
The Trust has so far raised more than $130,000 for Willy Ellison’s children.
